Toilet renovation in Nieuwegein

Renewing a toilet, wall-hung or floor-standing, with a concealed cistern, new tiling and a small hand basin.

In a toilet renovation I replace the toilet, the pipework and the tiling one after the other: wall-hung or floor-standing, with a concealed cistern and a small hand basin if you want one. How long it takes, I tell you after seeing the toilet. I also fit bidets and urinals.

What I do for you

I work in Nieuwegein and Utrecht, and for a bigger job further out into the region.

Toilet renovation by DZRMS, completed work in Nieuwegein

How I go about it

  • Replacing a floor-standing toilet with a wall-hung one, or fitting a new toilet in the same place.
  • The concealed cistern built into the wall or behind a false wall, for a smooth finished wall.
  • New tiling on the walls and the floor, with grout and sealant joints finished.
  • Fitting and connecting a small hand basin.
  • Fitting a bidet and connecting it to water and drainage, also in an existing toilet room.
  • Fitting urinals for hospitality, offices and commercial premises, with the pipework and the tiling around them.
  • The old toilet, the old tiling and the rubble taken out and removed.

A toilet is a small room with a lot of work in it. The drain, the cistern, the walls, the floor and the sanitary ware all have to fit in a few square metres. In a toilet renovation I take those parts one after the other, so nobody has to wait for anybody else.

Fitting a wall-hung toilet or replacing a toilet

A wall-hung toilet hangs on the wall. The floor underneath stays free, which makes cleaning easier and a small toilet feel bigger. The cistern sits in a frame that disappears into the wall or behind a false wall. If you want a smooth wall with no visible cistern, that is the way to go.

A floor-standing toilet stands on the floor and is the smaller job if the wall can stay closed. If all you want is a new toilet in the same place, it is a smaller job: replacing a toilet.

Where the job sits: the drain

When you go from floor-standing to wall-hung, most of the work is in the drain. With a wall-hung toilet the drain has to come into the wall, and if it is now in the floor, something has to be opened up to move it. That is why I look at how the drain runs before I say what the job will be. If the old pipes turn out to need replacing once things are open, we discuss whether I replace them there and then, because replacing pipework is something I do as well.

Fitting a concealed cistern

I have done several toilets with a concealed cistern. The frame goes in first, and only after that do the tiles go on. You cannot reverse that order: a frame that sits behind the tiles does not come out again.

Tiling and flooring in a small toilet

In a small toilet every cut and every grout line shows. So I set out first where the first whole tile goes, especially on a floor with a pattern such as Portuguese tiles. Around the concealed cistern and in the corners is where most of the cutting is.

I have done toilets with a Portuguese tile floor, with dark green wall tiles and a wood-look floor, with large white wall tiles on a dark floor and with walls that are half tiled and painted above. What suits your home we work out on site. More about tiles and floors is under floors and tiles.

Fitting a bidet or urinal

A small hand basin can go in a small toilet too, if there is wall space for it. It has its own water supply and drain, so those have to be in place before the tiles go on.

I fit a bidet in an existing toilet room, connected to water and drainage. You do need space next to the toilet for it.

I fit urinals in commercial premises, offices and restaurants and bars, with the pipework and the tiling around them. In hospitality I plan the work with you, so the place is closed for as short a time as possible. How I handle that is under commercial and hospitality.

The toilet next to the bathroom

If the toilet is next to a bathroom that is also due, it is one job: strip-out, pipework, tiling and sanitary ware in one go. How that works is on the page about bathroom renovation in Nieuwegein. For a whole house or flat, the toilet fits into a complete renovation.

How a toilet fits into a whole home you can see in the house I fitted out completely: the wall opened for a new concealed cistern, the drain reset and the wall-hung toilet mounted on it.

How I go about it

I come and look, measure up the toilet and check how the drain runs. After that you know what is possible and what the job involves, and only then does a quote follow. Send me a photo of the toilet beforehand, and one of the place where the drain goes into the floor or the wall, through the contact page. Then I can already tell you whether a wall-hung toilet will work in your toilet room.

What sets the price

The hours in a toilet are in what is behind the wall and under the floor: where the drain runs, whether it has to move and whether a false wall goes in front of the cistern. Then comes the tiling, and in a small room there is a lot of cutting around the cistern and in the corners. That is why I look at the drain first and work out the price afterwards, with the quote saying per item what I do.

What it comes down to

  • Whether the drain stays where it is or has to be moved, because that decides whether the floor or the wall has to be opened up.
  • Wall-hung or floor-standing. A wall-hung toilet needs a frame, a concealed cistern and usually a false wall.
  • How much wall and floor gets tiled, and the size and pattern of the tile.
  • Whether a hand basin is added, with its own water supply and drain.
  • Whether a bidet or a urinal is added.
  • The state of the wall and the floor after the strip-out, which you only see once the old tiling is off.
  • Access: materials and rubble that have to go up or down stairs take more time than work on the ground floor.

What is included

  • Measuring up in the toilet itself.
  • Stripping out the old toilet and the old tiling.
  • Supply and drain pipes where the new toilet will go.
  • Fitting the frame and the concealed cistern, and connecting the toilet to the drain.
  • Tiling on the walls and the floor, grouting and sealant joints.
  • Fitting and connecting a hand basin if that is part of the job.
  • Taking away the old sanitary ware and the building waste.

What comes on top

  • The toilet, the cistern and the tiles themselves. I usually do buy those for you.
  • Work on the gas pipe or the meter cupboard, which is for a certified installer.
  • Electrics: we include lights and sockets in the agreement up front.
  • Repair of a wall or floor that turns out to be structurally unsound after the strip-out.
  • Painting and a new door, unless we include that up front.

Send a few photos of the situation and say briefly what you want. Then you hear from me what it will cost in your case, itemised and with no strings attached.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace a floor-standing toilet with a wall-hung toilet?

Yes, but it is more than taking the old toilet off and putting the new one on. A wall-hung toilet hangs on a frame with a concealed cistern, and the drain has to be in the wall. If the drain of your current toilet is in the floor, it has to be moved, and that means opening up part of the floor or the wall. That is why I look at how the drain runs first, before I say what the job will be.

What is the difference between a wall-hung and a floor-standing toilet?

A wall-hung toilet hangs on the wall and leaves the floor underneath free. That is easier to sweep and mop, and the room looks bigger. The cistern is inside the wall. A floor-standing toilet stands on the floor, usually with the cistern behind or above it. It is the smaller job if the wall has to stay closed. A wall-hung toilet needs more work around it: frame, drain, wall and tiles.

What does fitting a wall-hung toilet cost?

That depends mostly on what is behind the wall and under the floor. A wall-hung toilet on a drain that is already in the wall is a different job from a toilet where the drain has to be moved, and a false wall with new tiling takes more hours than a toilet that is only replaced. I do not put figures on this site. After I have seen the toilet, you get a quote that says per item what I do.

How long does a toilet renovation take?

How long it takes, I tell you after seeing the toilet. What decides the time is whether the drain has to be moved, whether there is a false wall and how long adhesive, grout and sealant need to dry.

Can I still reach a concealed cistern if something breaks?

Yes, with the common concealed cisterns. The flush button sits in an operating panel that comes off, and behind it is the cistern with the parts that wear out. A properly fitted concealed cistern does not have to come out of the wall when something needs replacing.

Can you also fit a bidet or a urinal?

Yes. I fit a bidet on water and drainage, also in an existing toilet room. I fit urinals for hospitality, offices and commercial premises, with the pipework and the tiling around them. In a restaurant or bar I plan the work with you, so the place is closed for as short a time as possible.

Do I have to arrange a plumber and a tiler myself?

No. I do the pipework, the drainage, the tiling and the sanitary ware myself, so you have one point of contact.

What customers say

“I am very happy with how Dido carried out the work. I had a leak and mold problem in my kitchen sink. He replaced the faucet, sink, and parts of the installation. The result turned out very nicely. Dido is very knowledgeable and very solution-oriented. I will definitely hire him again for other jobs.”

Three short steps. I look at it and call you back to talk it through.

Step 1 of 3: who you are and how I reach you
Step 2 of 3: what needs doing

The more concrete you write it down, the better I can judge what it is going to cost.

Step 3 of 3: where you are

I would rather give you a call. Your email address is only there in case I cannot reach you.
